Our Story
The Origin of Azorean Coffee!
The unique flavor born between the sea and the mountains.
In the heart of São Jorge Island, nestled between cliffs that plunge into the Atlantic and the tranquility of the Fajãs, a café is growing that defies all conventions.
Here in Fajã dos Vimes, just a few meters above sea level—where no one would expect to find a coffee plantation—nature decided to bless us with a rare and fertile microclimate. It was in this almost secret corner of the Azores that our coffee took root, more than two centuries ago.
A Story Passed Down from Generation to Generation
It is believed that he was an Azorean emigrant who, at the end of the 18th or beginning of the 19th century, brought back from Brazil the first Arabica coffee seeds. Planted with hope, they grew alongside the traditions of the Fajã families. At the Nunes Craft House, where the looms still sing the “high point” of the typical quilts, the passion for a different kind of coffee was also born — a coffee to share with those who arrived, a coffee that became part of the conversation, the affection, the visit.
It was Manuel Nunes who decided to preserve and care for this legacy, increasing the production of artisanal coffee to offer to visitors who sought out the quilts of his mother Alzira and his aunt Carminda. And so, without haste, but with much love, Café Nunes® was born — a small space, created in 1997, to serve a drink that was already part of the soul of Fajã.
Coffee with Soul and Patience
Produced using traditional methods, harvested and processed manually by the same family that has preserved this tradition for decades, Café da Fajã dos Vimes® is more than a drink — it’s an experience. Here, there’s no rush. Each bean is carefully harvested, sun-dried for weeks, and roasted with precision, as if time still obeyed the rhythms of nature.
We don’t use pesticides or chemicals. The land is nourished with what it gives us: coffee husks, leaves, branches, and manure. The result? A 100% organic, healthy coffee with a unique sensory profile: fruity, aromatic, subtly sweet, and with an elegant acidity. With less caffeine than commercial coffees, but with a flavor that leaves a lasting impression on those who taste it.
Visit, Feel, Taste
When visiting Café Nunes®, visitors are invited to travel back in time. The space remains true to the 90s, simple and welcoming. In the back of the house, it is possible to see part of the plantation, observe the threshing floors where the coffee rests in the sun, and smell the memories in the air. And of course, a visit to the Nunes Craft House is a must, where to this day the weavers keep alive the tradition that sustains this café with linen hands.
For those with a sweet tooth, we have coffee and yam pastries and the famous São Jorge Species — small delicacies that make the visit even more memorable.
